HEFTY OUTPUT Hefty Output is made up of 2 Aussies from Melbourne, Dan Verbi and Tim Hanlon. The pair had been mates for years and had their own musical talents, Dan had been a drummer for many years and Tim was a bass guitarist. However after catching the ‘psychedelic bug’ in early 2001 they realised that they had very similar ideas when it came to psytrance and started their own project. They worked very hard creating their own distinguishable sound – a sound that growls and grooves relentlessly leaving you no alternative but to dance! This sound was then dubbed Hefty Output. Their HUGE dirty rolling basslines, general grimy darkpsy style and wicked sense of humour was welcomed by the Melbourne underground which had been seriously lacking any decent night time producers. In ’04 some of their material was leaked on to the net and a substantial fan base came quickly thus opening the doors to the international stage for them. In January ’05 they were signed to Ketuh Records and continue to write and and tour. Watch out for a new album which will hopefully be coming soon. Highko began mixing psytrance whilst he was on holiday in Thailand in 2000. At the time he was organising parties and doing deco painting under the name of Trancemosphere. As is the case with so many artists, the next evolution was to start writing his own music which he did in 2002 with just a laptop and headphones!!! In 2004 he founded the label Noise Poison Records along with Dj Iguana of Naked Tourist and their discography is ever growing. Over the last few years he has been building his own studio with Cosmo and together they release music under the name Highcosmos. Their first album ‘4Real’ was released in 2006 as was Highko’s solo album, ‘Noise Brothers On Poison’. As well as being a high quality producer, Highko is also a very competent dj. Behind the Hishiryo project is Frenchman Cyril Pin aka Dj Shenz. Cyril began djing in 2000 and producing in 2004. His style is fast night time psytrance though he also sometimes produces ambient music. He likes to keep different energies flowing through tracks and often collaborates with other darkpsy artists in order to keep fresh different perspectives on the music. Shenz is now working on his debut solo album which is hopefully going to be released before the end of 2007 on Kabrathor Records. Hyldhegan is a project from the combined talents of Portuguese artists and friends Palex and K Lapso. They came together with the sole purpose of creating very dark and very fast psychedelic tunes that grab a hold of you and force you to dance whether you want to or not!!! Their releases to date are Satanic Byble on the Triplag VA Primal Scream and 4 tracks featured on Palex’s 2007 album Mortifer Foedus. They have also offered up the track Harem Scarem as a free download (available in our tracks section) and will soon feature on the first album from The Darkpsyde, Tales From The Darkpsyde Vol.1. Expect nothing less than pure psychedelic madness from these 2! Ikpeng is a project started in ’06 from 2 Brazilian brothers, Thadeu (aka Stun) and Bernard (aka Moicano) Carvalho. They took a lot of inspiration from watching quality artists at parties and festivals and then mixed that with their passion for hard rock music and from this began their djing careers in ’03 playing at smaller parties in their area. From this experience they absorbed as much knowledge as possible which in turn spawned the desire to create a darkpsy sound that was different but at the same time still loaded with the psychedelic spirit, and so the Ikpeng project was born.
As for the name, there are a few versions told behind the Indian term Ikpeng. Most people state that Ikpeng is the name of an angry wasp, the larvae of which is rubbed against the skin during an Indian warrior ritual. According to others however the term is an ethnonym (the name given for an ethnic group) and there is yet another version which says that it was a name given to these people by their ancient enemies which they later adopted for themselves. Iron Madness is the brainchild of Ziv Vanier from Quiryat city, Israel. Ziv was born in ’86 and his musical ‘career’ started at the young age of 11 when he began learning to play the harmonica and a selection of other instruments. At the age of 14 he heard psytrance for the first time and found such depth and enormous beauty in the music that almost immediately he decided he too wanted to produce. The Iron Madness project was then born and since then Ziv has had tracks released on many different labels as well as his debut album, Slaughter Shiver, which was released in 2007. His unique style of darkpsy is a blend of dark atmospheric and powerful twilight tunes which never fail to ignite the dancefloor. The mind behind the Jesus Raves project is Serbian born Zdravko Gladovic (86) His first contact with music production came in 2001 when along with a friend he began producing Detroit techno/schranz using an old pc with a Pentium 2 processor, Cubase, a Yamaha DX11 synth and a rubbish Roland drum machine! These days however he is producing using Ableton Live as the main sequencer though sometimes with Cakewalk Sonar, Nuendo or Cubase and some extra hardware. The result is a heavy darkpsy sound with twisted ambiences, strong rhythms and leads that get deep inside your head taking you on incredible journeys. Zdravko doesn’t really draw influences from other people, just tries to do his own thing and create his own unique style. For this same reason he is not a fan of making so many vs tracks. Aside from the Jesus Raves project he has another down tempo/old skool psy project with E.Bug from Kannibal Holokaust called Chemical Products. He also calls himself a ‘vintage synth freak’ with a real passion for old skool hardware. 800 Deathsticks and Kabayun are solo projects of David Mostoller, currently living on the East Coast of the US. Having played bass guitar and various other musical instruments for a number of years he eventually found his way to electronic music and subsequently, in late 2006, began producing night time psytrance. His style is characterized by heavy leads and atmospheres with hard pounding bass lines. In addition to these 2 projects David is also part of Unwashed Tomato (with the Andychrist and Sixtycycles) and is one of the founders of Unwashed Records. Emerging from deep within the Israeli underground comes Vadim C aka Kalilaskov AS. Originally from Russia, he moved to Israel to settle down in the 90’s. Vadim began his own psychedelic experiments (another Dr.Hofmann disciple!) in ’98 and immediately became involved with the electronic music scene. He began the Kalilaskov AS project in 2000 and then spent his time and effort over the next five years trying to make new and innovative darkpsy sounds and generally trying crazy stuff. Kalilaskov AS’ music was an instant hit when his first track was released and he set a new standard of production quality in Israeli darkpsy and indeed psytrance in general. Kerosene Club is the creation of Brian Fernandes (dj 26Brian) from India. The project first came into existence, mentally anyway, in the middle of a mix during one of Brian’s dj sets. The mental intensity of that moment of creation was so extreme that Brian doesn’t remember so much about the night but ever since then Kerosene Club has been lurking in his mind, sometimes active sometimes dormant. The Kerosene Club project embraces a wide variety of elements, including powerful dark atmospheres combined with the furious beats of today and some old skool vibes thrown in for diversity. As you can imagine, the end result is brutal! The aim however is not to scare people but instead to allow people to experience the rush of adrenaline that fear induces via chaos. Hopefully then learning to control it to the point where you begin to enjoy it and make it your bitch!!! As well as writing under the Kerosene Club name, Brian also has another darkpsy project called Flipknot and a more full on oriented project called Stomp. On top of all this Brian owns and runs darkpsy label Temple Twisters Records and helps with a couple of other labels too. The man behind the Khaos Sektor project is darkpsy artist Miguel Muchagata from Portugal. He first started going to trance parties in 1999 and then realised that he too could make music. It wasn’t until 2005 however that he started making music with his friends just for fun, and because he liked electronic music. Soon after he began composing more seriously, the Khaos Sektor project was named and in 2007 was signed to Kanka Records. The music is composed using Fruity Loops 7 and an M Audio Oxygen v2 midi. Rise Of Evil is a new darkpsy project started in 2007. The project is made up of Khaos Sektor and Ahriman - Arhyperziiman from Mexico and the sound makes for a good psychedelic voyage. Leo aka KINDZADZA : He was born in Russia, Moscow. The exact time is not yet known by scientists. Little Leo really enjoyed to take clocks and watches apart. When he got bored of that, he began to build computers. Once he found out that computers can make nice sounds. Later he came to Goa, India, met with full power psytrance and learned how things are organized in time and space. Since that time he has been creating psytrance for powerful dancing. He thinks that the dance is the most available way to reach harmony with inner and outer space, proved to be true for centuries. Alex ‘Kiriyama’ comes from the Swedish town of Örebro, a town that thrives on darkpsy and where many other respected scene members come from, Vegetal, Katastrof and Dennis the Menace to name a few. Kiriyama’s music is fast, exciting and brutal and he has had many tracks released on various compilations. The man himself is quite introverted and humble as he trys to express with the Kiriyama pseudonym. Kiri has another project too, with Vegetal, called Peacespect who have also had releases and are very well respected. Alex is also a co-founder of the Devils Mind Records label and studio group Checkpoint Music. Krono Psy is a darkpsy project from Luis Maia, a 23 year old Portuguese producer who has been living in Holland since 2004. Luis has been involved in the psytrance scene for a few years now but only discovered the production side of things in ’06 after seeing his friend Helder (aka Rawar) working on a track. After then he began learning to create his own sounds, first with Reason and now with Fruity Loops and Cubase. He also utilises Ableton Live for his live performances. Once he had learned his way around all these programs he felt confident enough to ‘step out’ and so the Krono Psy project was presented to the world bringing with it a sound of full power night time meets twisted forest trance, always trying to blend in unique effects and incorporate stories of horror/terror/action and even sometimes comedy into his compositions. Krono Psy is now working in collaboration with some of the scene’s most innovative labels, Alche Magik Media (parent label of Black, Blue, Green + Red Magik Recs), Skitzophrenik Lifeforms Recs and Trancemoon to name a few and has also started his own label, Insane Chaos Circuit Recs, with fellow producer and friend Hugo (aka Silent Enemy) Krono Psy has had one official release to date, on the Skitzophrenik Lifeforms VA Digital Decoder and is currently writing for other upcoming releases. Prepare yourself for the craziness that is Krono Psy! Yet another top quality darkpsy act coming out of Portugal is Kryptum aka Claudio. Having previously worked under different names Claudio decided that it was time to take a more serious and professional approach to producing and started a brand new project, Kryptum, which was born from a number of inspirational factors which resulted in a pure night time electronic act. Kulu is Greek man Dimitri Kouloukourgiotis. For the past 8 years he has been djing at parties all over the world under the Kulu name and more recently has been releasing music under that name too. Whether djing or producing the music is always a hard psychedelic freakout style with very strong compositions. Kulu is also half of the Metallaxis darkpsy project alongside Polyphonia. LAB is the darkpsy project of Renato Moreira from Portugal. He began with electronic music in 1998 and gained a taste for computerized production using Rebirth 1.0. In 2000 he evolved to using programs like Fruity Loops and had his first experiments in the genres of breakbeat, downtempo and house before finally finding his niche in the darker areas of psychedelic trance having been influenced by the upcoming wave of Russian sounds. Argentinians Nicolas Di Bernado (aka Filter) and Matias Benamo (aka z1P) are darkpsy act Megalopsy. Their musical history is not really that psychedelic but is very dark. They both played in heavy metal bands and also had a band project together that was a fusion of nu-metal and grunge. Years after this however they discovered psytrance and simply couldn’t get enough. In 2001 they finally got their hands on some samplers, sequencers and synths and the Megalopsy project was born. After lots of experimentation and hard work their debut album The Abstract Machine was released in 2005 and received very well by audiences around the globe and paving the way for other Argentinian and Latin American artists. The pair have solo projects as well, Prisma (Nicolas) and Frantic Noise (Matias). The latter releasing the album The Nordland Orchestra in 2006, again to a hugely positive global response. To top it all off the duo founded independent record label Dark Prisma Records! Keep your eyes and ears open, the story has only just begun! Melorix is Gill Bruggeman, a dj/producer from Mortsel, Belgium Having started producing tunes in 2000 and having worked his way through those difficult first years, Gill has, over time, become a twisted and dangerous darkpsy producer. He makes his music at his home using minimum material and taking his influences from techno, gabber, hardcore, terrorcore, breakcore, speedcore…..anything with ‘core at the end of it! + artists such as Dj Shadow, Aphex Twin and more. You had better beware of him though, he will hunt you down and find you!!! Skunks of Satan called him a first born child filled with madness….There is no escape from this crazy freak! Metallaxis is a darkpsy project from Greece made up of 2 already internationally recognised names, Polyphonia and Kulu. In ’95, after many years of hardcore and metal, they discovered and immediately became addicted to psytrance. Their addiction stemmed from and was fed by the full energy outdoor parties that were being held all around Greece. The music had such a powerful effect on the pair that they decided to dedicate themselves to psytrance, first having their own solo projects and then teaming up to form Metallaxis in ’04. MDS is the project of Nelson aka Dj Nel-sun who comes from Portugal but grew up in Brussels. It was in Portugal in ‘93 when Nelson first came into contact with psytrance. Through parties in Portugal and also through extensive travelling Nelson discovered the many different styles within the scene. His favourite style was darker psy which he began djing in ’98 under the name Nel-sun. In 2000 Nelson moved back to Belgium and continued djing. He then founded the party promoting crew Mystical Druids Society and whenever possible still organises free parties. Nelson played his first live set in ’04 and was subsequently signed to Trishula Records in ’05. In his own words his musical style is energetic night time psychedelia designed as much for the brain as for the body. Mubali is a psytrance producer/dj from just outside San Francisco. He has been djing for quite a few years now, mainly spinning (dark)psy but also occasionally breaking out some drum ‘n’ bass and jungle. In the last few years however he has turned his attention towards the production side of things. As a child he spent 7 years playing the viola and has always had a passion for music both instrumental and electronic. As well as being a dedicated fan of all forms of psychedelic music he also has a passion for jazz, rock, funk and heavy metal and these influences can clearly be heard in his music. It came to his attention that many of the structures found in EDM are very similar to those found within classical compositions and he has conducted extensive research into this in order to try and find inspiration for his own compositions’ structures. His debut album Cats @ Play was released in ’06 and he continues to regularly release tracks on VA albums as well. Naked Tourist is the project of 2 sound freaks, Martin and Bjorn. They both had different musical backgrounds. Martin successfully completed an audio engineering course and has been using pc, music and midis since 1992 and Bjorn has been djing psychedelic music since 1999. When Martin moved to Berlin he met Bjorn and they moved into an apartment together. They started writing psytrance together and after the completion of their first tune Bjorn had the opportunity to play it at several parties. The response from the crowds and record labels alike was thoroughly positive and loving the feeling of seeing a crowd enjoying their music so much gave them the motivation to continue the project. They have tracks released on a variety of psy compilations and in 2006 they released their first album ‘Mad Different Methods’. Necropsycho is the darkpsy creation of producer and guitarist Hermann and producer and dj Nuccho from Sao Paulo, Brazil. They started the project in 2003 and take their influences from industrial, hardcore and gabber with a chunk of guitar riffs too. The resulting style is dark! Heavy melodies, phat rolling basslines and torn timbres melded together to produce brutal atmospheres. Netrosystem is Baruch Geda, born in Haifa, Israel in ’88. Originally Netrosystem was a 2 man act, made up with Baruch’s friend Guy. They played all over the country and received many good reviews, however after a year and a half the duo went their separate ways due to personal reasons but Baruch continued the project alone. Even as a child Baruch listened to trance music, often falling asleep listening to Goa trance. At the age of 12 he decided that he too would like to compose music and started doing so using programs such as Fruity Loops, Fast Tracker. Now however he uses Cubase SX. Baruch’s music is darkpsy with menacing atmospheres. He prefers to play in the early morning hours as he feels it is the most beautiful time for music creation and he feels as if the music is hypnotising and controlling him. He however is most definitely out of control!!! Noise Collapse is a project between Matías Benamo (Megalopsy/Frantic Noise) and Patricio Cufre (Collapse). Both are talented musicians with a lot of experience in the world of psytrance and an impressive combined catalogue of quality releases between them. The resulting music from these 2 combined talents is a combination of beautiful solid rolling basslines, intricate synthwork and deep atmospheres which take the listener on a colourful journey through the psychedelic landscape. In their own words; 'Noise Collapse is the moment when 2 bodies make impact, in this case 2 or more sound experiences collapse resulting in a colourful sound experience. The sparks fly everywhere enchanting everything they touch as they spread.' Ocelot is American producer Aaron Peacock. Born into a very musical family he learned to play many instruments including guitar, bass, cello, French horn, drums and pretty much anything else he could get his hands on!!! As a teenager he started producing electronic music, settling into the genre of ‘high impact psytrance’ and in 2002, as Ocelot, he released his first ‘album ‘Aural Sects’ which was then followed up in 2007 with the album ‘Psymatix’. Aaron also produces music under the name Vector Selector. Direct from Athens, Greece comes the Orestis project. It all began with heavy metal, hardcore and goth music and then progressed to psytrance when he had his first taste in ’96. The discovery of the world of electronic music led to him into djing in 2001 and not long afterwards he began transforming his psychedelic thoughts into dark atmospheric music.
