DARKPSY EXCLUSIVE
THE DARKPSYDE INTERVIEW
-----------------------
KRYPTUM

This month we are joined by darkpsy producer Kryptum aka Claudio, another well respected and fast rising star from the Portuguese underground. Welcome to The Darkpsyde Claudio.
Hello! First of all congratulations for the great site!
Thanks very much, glad you like it. So, let’s get started!
Q 1 – Firstly, the name Kryptum has a certain Superman-esque ring to it but where does the name actually come from?
A – The name comes from messing with the words cryptic and kryptós, which means “hidden” in Greek. I came up with it when I decided to start a more serious project, both conceptually and musically, based on the surrealist and experimental forms of art I admire. I felt it connected with the music I was starting to make somehow and so I kept it.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Q 2 – You have released quite a lot of tracks on different VA albums in the last year, all of which have received excellent reviews. Are you working on or do you have plans to release a full length album any time soon?
A – Yes I’m working on the debut album at the moment. It will be a concept album and will sound quite different from the stuff I released on VA compilations. With those single releases I always went in a more “dancefloor-friendly” direction but a full album has much more room for experimentation. I’ve been writing with that in mind and so far I can tell it won’t be a straight forward 9 dance tracks cd but instead it will have a bit of every genre I like to produce. All of it influenced mainly by late 80’s and early 90’s industrial and other genres of music.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Q 3 – From previous interviews with Portuguese producers it has been established that the darkpsy scene is only just taking off in Portugal. Do you feel that there is a good sense of comradery between all of the new producers emerging, as in everyone supports and helps out everyone else? A – Yes there is defenitely a sharing of knowledge and ideas which I think is crucial for the development of the scene.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Q 4 – Do you have any side projects or collaborations going on at the moment or is Kryptum a ‘one man show’?
A – There’s some collaborations being planned but I’ll keep producing and playing solo. As far as side projects go, I’ve been working on other genres of music (IDM, industrial and ambient) and hopefully later this year I’ll be presenting some of this material on a free EP.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Q 5 – I have never been to Portugal and don’t know the geography or climate of the country but where are the majority of parties held? Are they mainly indoor parties or more outdoor orientated, i.e in the forests or on the beaches?
A – Mostly they are outdoors in the forests. Parties by the major organisers are usually held in the central and southern parts of the country while smaller and free parties happen everywhere.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Q 6 – What are your views on the current trend of music piracy?
A – I think it’s negative and at the same time positive. There’s obviously less sales and so on but it’s good for artists to spread their music so much more and the chances of being booked for more gigs increases a lot. To be honest I wouldn’t have known about the music that I’m fan of nowadays if it wasn’t without the help of mp3 sharing. I stand above all for the “try before buy” attitude, so if I like a cd I’ll definitely buy it.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Q 7 – Darkpsy is the label that has been slapped upon our music, personally I prefer the description full power night time psytrance. It is a debate that has been going on almost since the expression was first coined, so, do you like the term ‘darkpsy’?
A – I agree with the term “dark” when it is used to describe music that has that objective/atmosphere which, in my opinion, is not so common as it seems in the psytrance scene. I really prefer the description you yourself use to talk about what most people would call dark. Sometimes I even just call it “psytrance”.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Q 8 – Where is your favourite place in the world to party and why?
A – So far I really enjoyed Sweden, even though the place I have been to more parties is Portugal, Swedish experiences stay on top.I’m looking forward to partying someday in Japan and India.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Q 9 – What is your best party memory as an artist and why?
A – This is a difficult one...almost every party I played at was special for me in some way or another, but if I have to choose... it would be the first one, because it was the first.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Q 10 - And your best memory as a party goer and why?
A – It has to be a 2 day festival by Good Mood and Mechanik Sound Records in 2003 at the same place that the Boom festival is held. I had lots of fun there and the music was great.
