DARKPSY EXCLUSIVE
THE DARKPSYDE INTERVIEW
-----------------------
PALEX

In 2006 Triplag released a free VA entitled Primal Scream. On that VA was one track in particular that made me and many others reach for the tracklist to see what we were hearing! This savage sonic assault on the senses was the track Mad Creek and the artist was Palex.
Since then, Palex has gone on to release a number of tracks on various compilations and also released a full length album on Black Magik Records entitled Mortifer Foedus which also includes several tracks from his side project Hyldhegan (with K Lapso). The duo appeared on the first Darkpsyde VA, Tales From The Darkpsyde Vol.1 and Palex will also have a track on the upcoming VA from us, Tales….Vol.2.
So with great pleasure I welcome one of my personal favourite artists, Palex, to The Darkpsyde. It’s great to have you here Paulo, let's get to it :) ----------------------------------------------------------------
Q1 - I think it is fair to say that you were one of the pioneers of the newly emerging super brutal Portuguese sound. Darkpsy is a fairly new concept in Portugal so where do you draw your inspiration from?
A – Well, my inspiration comes from several years of djing all different electronic music styles plus there are 2 or 3 artists that marked the beginning of my path to this style. I gotta confess there was an album that really inspired me, ‘Psycho Piano’ by Iron Madness. I keep listening to it over and over without getting tired of it!! All this plus a special love for horror/thriller movies keeps me on the dark path!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Q2 - Are you a self taught producer or have you studied music production somewhere?
A – I had my basic lessons early at school though I can’t say that’s useful for me these days. You are right, yes, I am a self taught producer. All I know I learned thanks to the internet, especially ‘Google’, can’t live without it!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Q3 - What software and hardware are you currently using for your creations?
A – I use the magical FL studio, Sony Soundforge, 2 monitors, a million VSTs and most importantly, my brain.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Q4 - Your Mortifer Foedus album was one of the most no holds barred albums of last year and rightly earned you a great deal of respect within the underground night time trance community. Are you working on a second album yet or do you have some other projects in the pipeline?
A – Well, Mortifer Foedus really pumped me up, that’s right, but right next to the album release I had a separate professional issue that took away all my free time until this month so I was a bit out of the studio and out of the scene even though I did manage to produce a few tracks. Right now I have several tracks on the forge and of course, Hyldhegan must continue! As for a new album...well, who knows?
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Q5 - Apart from your collaboration with K Lapso, the Hyldhegan project, and a couple of other co-produced tracks you haven't released so many vs tracks. Do you generally prefer to work alone or has the opportunity for a vs track simply not appeared?
A – In my opinion working on a vs track is great for both artists as they can learn with each other, sharing ideas and techniques.I have a couple of vs tracks coming up with Intekshine and a few others in the pipeline too.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Q6 - Do you have the chance to play many shows outside of Portugal? Where has been your favourite experience so far?
A – I had some invitations in 2006 and last year but I couldn’t attend them due to professional issues. It was impossible for me unfortunately.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Q7 - Apart from producing music you also run a very successful cyber-café. How did that business venture come about? Has it always been a dream of yours to own something like that?
A – Yes it was a dream to own a cyber-café but 14 months later I realised that it was no good deal because it took away my freedom, my music and almost my family.I’m happy to announce that finally it’s over and I have my life back!!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Q8 - Darkpsy is the label that has been slapped upon our music. Although the description is accurate, dark and psychedelic, I personally prefer to call it full power night time psytrance. The debate about this label has been going on almost since the expression was first coined, so, what are your thoughts on the term 'darkpsy'?
A – I think there is no style definition for good music. Personally I don’t like the term either. Let’s say your definition is highly appropriate.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Q9 - If you could play a show in any place in the world where would you choose and why?
A – I think I would choose Mexico, it would be great. They are real night time lovers!!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Q10 - So what do you hope that the future holds for Palex? What do you consider to be the next step?
A - Well, I’m starting all over again now. I don’t know what the future holds. I think the next steps will just progress naturally and I will just let it flow.
