DARKPSY EXCLUSIVE
THE DARKPSYDE INTERVIEW
-----------------------
VEGETAL

One of the most interesting acts to have emerged in recent years is that of Swedish artist Peter Themizian aka Vegetal. His unique and innovative blend of brutal darkpsy beats mixed with unexpected melodies, huge live guitar riffs and samples packed with political activism has lead to him building up a massive fan base around the world. Now fresh back from a tour of South America it is my pleasure to welcome Peter to The Darkpsyde. It’s great to have you here, thanks for joining us :)
Q 1 – As I mentioned before you have just returned from a South American tour. Who were you on tour with and how was the experience for you?
A – I had the pleasure to tour with Karim aka Jelly Headz and Ghreg On Earth which was a very interesting tour considering that no one has ever tried that in Mexico. The parties were very shifting in their quality to say the least, after the whole tour was done my final conclusion left a lot of thoughts and lessons to be learned for all people involved including myself. In the long run though I have to say it was a good experience for me, I met a lot of great people with big hearts and it actually gave a lot of inspiration and hope for the future. Another observation I made during this tour was that there is a lot of people that actually live for the music, really refreshing when you see all the bullshit going on at Isratrance.com.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Q 2 – You live in the Swedish town of Örebro where it seems the majority of Swedish darkpsy (and psytrance) acts come from, Derango, Kiriyama and Katastrof to name just a very few. Why do you think there is so much psychedelic creativity coming out of such a relatively obscure little town?
A – To be honest I have no idea why it was Örebro, I’m pretty sure the legacy that came from the legendary Kilsbergen parties has something to do with it even though I never attended those parties when I was a kid.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Q 3 – It is very refreshing to find someone who incorporates samples with a real message into their music as opposed to the now almost standard screams and horror samples that are so prevalent in darkpsy. Where does your political passion originate from?
A – I know that my parents played a major role to inspire me, especially my father, he has inspired me in many aspects, he has given me the eyes of a critic and I thank him deeply for that.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Q 4 – Your 2006 album Free Thinkers Are Dangerous received critical acclaim from all corners of the world and the question on many people’s lips is when will there be a new full length Vegetal album?
A – There will be a follow up album hopefully being released this year on Devilsmind Recs. The concept for this record is gonna be very different from the last record, if the last one was about all the issues then this record will be the solution and what we can do to make this world a better place. Also one more thing is that I’m gonna present a lot of contradictions on the album to allow the listener to see the issue from many aspects.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Q 5 – Apart from your work under the Vegetal name you are also half of the Peacespect project alongside Kiriyama. You guys had 3 official track releases in 2005 but since then nothing new has emerged. Is the project still active and if so what does the future hold?
A – Well the project is at the moment on ice because both myself and Alex are very busy with our university studies, I’m graduating this summer and Alex has always a lot of homework to deal with so it’s hard to sync and be able to create something. We´re trying to send projects between us but I personally prefer to work together under the same roof.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Q 6 – If you had the opportunity to collaborate with any musician at all who would you work with and why?
A – If we´re talking about any kind of musician and not a psytrance producer then I’d say it would be to work on some electronic metal collaboration with “All shall perish” or “Heaven shall burn” If we´re talking about psytrance then I think it would be Orestis, Hishiryo and Ocelot.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Q 7 – Darkpsy is the label that has been slapped upon our music though personally I prefer the description full power night time psy. It is a debate that has been going on almost since the expression was first coined, so, do you like the term ‘darkpsy’?
A – The term darkpsy to me sounds just lame if you ask me, I always wonder why people tends to place me there, I mean I don´t make darkpsy, I make music. I´ve seen pictures of people standing at graveyards and other weird things but when I see that I just laugh, it’s just hilarious that people actually think it gives them credit.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Q 8 – Many of the artists that I have spoken to about music piracy have mixed feelings about it; good for exposure and creating more potential bookings but bad for residual cash flow from albums. How do you personally feel about piracy?
A – Personally I think the CD is dead as a medium to your average citizen, people don´t want to head down to the city centre, buy the cd, go home, rip it to the computer to put the tracks on their Ipod People today are lazy, and unless the market comes up with a good business model to compete with the free downloading then it’s just gonna be like kicking water uphill. You’re not going to be able to stop the downloading now since everyone does it. I’d never replace my LPs and Cds with an mp3, I love to actually have a cover to look into as I put on my vinyl or cd.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Q 9 – Is there a specific country or location that you ‘dream’ of playing in but have not yet had the chance?
A – There are a lot of places I want to see, I don´t want to deliver a huge list here but some specific places are for instance India, Japan, Brazil, Venezuela and Argentina just to name a few.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Q 10 – To date, what is your best party memory as an artist and why?
A – Without a doubt that´s the party in Guatemala City on the DBS-tour, absolutely fucking amazing party, such energy I’ve never experienced in my whole life and I just hope to get back there one day.
